8-Day Itinerary Reflection on Kansai Region

Sharing my experience and insights from the recent 8-day free and easy trip to the Kansai region, along with a well-organized transportation plan.

Day 1

Upon arriving at Kansai International Airport around 13:00 local time, I had planned to visit Himeji Castle and stay in the Namba area. It was ideal to utilize the Himeji Tourist Pass for this part of the journey. The pass is exclusively available for purchase at Kansai International Airport and is also offered by selected travel agencies. Inside, it comes with a complimentary one-way Nankai Electric Railway ticket, allowing convenient travel from Kansai Airport to Namba. It stands out as a high-value travel voucher. For those not intending to visit Himeji Castle, an alternative option is to purchase the Kansai Airport Express Nankai Rap:t ticket.

Day 2

On the second day, early in the morning, I took a train from Nipponbashi Station to visit Kobe and Himeji Castle. Since I used the Himeji Tourist Pass, it was valid starting from Osaka Namba Station. If coming from other locations, you would need to travel to Osaka Namba Station first before using the Himeji Tourist Pass to enter. Later, I took a 20-minute train ride to Nishinomiya Station for a transfer and continued with a 1.5-hour journey to Sanyo Himeji Station. Upon arriving at Sanyo Himeji Station, I couldn’t help but appreciate the cleanliness of Japan’s streets and the ample width of sidewalks.

I reached Himeji Castle around 10:00, and there weren’t many tourists yet. I leisurely enjoyed ice cream from a vending machine while heading to the ticket counter. Entering the Himeji Castle main keep requires removing shoes. The staff provides bags and slippers, and it’s worth noting that the stairs can be a bit steep, so one must tread carefully. After exploring, which took almost until noon, I found a nearby restaurant for lunch before heading to the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge.

Upon reaching Kobe City in the late afternoon, it was still some time before our scheduled Kobe beef experience. Perhaps it was a small oversight on our part, but it allowed us sufficient time to do other things. So, we decided to visit the nearby Ikuta Shrine and explore the shopping street in the vicinity.

Day 3

On the third day, the itinerary was centered around Osaka City, making it ideal to use the Osaka Amazing Pass. This pass offered free tram rides for the day, as well as free or discounted admission to various attractions—a fantastic deal where the more you visit, the more you save!

When in Osaka, a visit to Osaka Castle is a must. I took the tram to Osaka Castle in the morning, and with the Osaka Amazing Pass, I could enter without any additional fees. There are two entrances—one via stairs and the other via an elevator. Seeing the crowd for the elevator, I opted for the stairs. Each floor had different exhibits, but note that some floors prohibit photography and recording.

Next, I took the Chuo Line to Osakako Station. Arriving around noon, I had lunch at Tempozan Marketplace. Afterward, I hopped on the Tempozan Ferris Wheel, and using the Amazing Pass, it was free. Adjacent to it was the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. I recommend purchasing electronic tickets online to save time. Simply present the electronic tickets to the staff, and if purchasing for friends, remember the corresponding ticket details for each person.

After exploring the aquarium, you can consider visiting the nearby Cosmo Tower Observatory or Umeda Sky Building Observatory. Both offer free admission with the Amazing Pass. Considering an early night’s rest, I decided to head to the Cosmo Tower Observatory near the aquarium.

Day 4

On the fourth day, I utilized the KYOTO-OSAKASIGHTSEEING PASS(1 day). I started by visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, where along the way, numerous food stalls tempted me with their enticing aromas. Since I left early without having breakfast, the delicious scents were too irresistible, prompting me to pause for a quick bite before continuing my exploration.

I didn’t spend too much time at Fushimi Inari. I then took the train to Kiyomizu-Gojo, where I planned to visit a reserved kimono shop. However, the weather took a turn for the worse, and it began to rain. Undeterred, we proceeded with changing into kimonos, and armed with umbrellas, we explored Kiyomizu Temple and captured some memorable photos. Unfortunately, Kiyomizu Temple was under renovation, and we couldn’t fully explore the entire site.

Yasaka Shrine

After touring Kiyomizu Temple, I headed to Yasaka Shrine for a visit. By the time I arrived around 5:00 PM, the shrine was not crowded, possibly due to the rain, prompting people to head home early. Following this, I strolled and dined in the Gion-Shijo area, concluding today’s shrine-hopping adventure.

Day 5

On the fifth day, a must-visit at Universal Studios was the Harry Potter themed area. I had already purchased electronic tickets in advance. I arrived early to queue for entry, and fortunately, it was during the off-peak season, so the crowd wasn’t too overwhelming. The Forbidden Journey in the Harry Potter area was a must-try attraction, with its special effects providing an immersive experience.

Later, I explored the Spider-Man Zone and experienced The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. Although this ride wasn’t as thrilling as The Forbidden Journey, it was enjoyable. There was a brief interruption during the ride, which was a bit disappointing as we didn’t get the full experience.

Next up was the Hollywood Dream – The Ride, an exhilarating roller coaster. This ride was the second most thrilling in the park. Surprisingly, the queue was short, and I was fortunate to secure a spot in the first row with only a 20-minute wait.

A visit to Universal Studios wouldn’t be complete without trying the Flying Dinosaur. Widely recognized as the most thrilling ride, I was once again lucky to secure a spot in the first row. The sensation of lying down and seeing the ground below added an extra level of intensity. Once the ride started, the strong centrifugal force pressed my back against the seat, and I had to make sure to empty my pockets to avoid losing anything during the ride.

Day 6

I woke up early to visit Nara Park before the deer were fed, wanting to see the energetic deer. It seemed they were hungrier at that time, so I recommend arriving early to feed them their first meal. Nara Park is quite vast, with numerous attractions, so I decided to stroll along the pathways, feeding the deer and enjoying the scenery. Along the way, I passed by Todai-ji Temple, Mount Wakakusa, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.

After exploring Kasuga Taisha Shrine, it was getting late. Due to some fatigue among my travel companions, we headed directly to Abeno for dinner. I had always wanted to visit the Abeno Harukas Observatory for its night view. After dinner, I brought my friends who were interested in seeing the night view. I must say, the view from this observatory was more beautiful than the one at the Umeda Sky Building. The place was bustling with a large crowd, making it a popular spot. It’s highly recommended for those who love night views.

Day 7

On the seventh day, I woke up particularly early to check the weather because I planned to take a boat to Arashiyama, and the service might be suspended in case of rain. Fortunately, the weather was splendid. In the morning, I took the JR train to Kameoka Station to board the Hozugawa River Boat. I purchased the boat ticket for the Hozugawa River Cruise, and since it was the off-peak season, there were only four departures per day. Together with the boatman, we enjoyed the scenic journey to Arashiyama, which took about two hours. Upon reaching Arashiyama, I strolled along the paths, admiring the landscapes that exuded the ambiance of ancient Japanese streets.

Day 8

On the eighth day, there were no specific plans, and everyone explored shopping and dining options near the hotel. I recommend visiting Kuromon Ichiba Market to indulge in some delicious sushi. Each piece of sushi there is exceptionally large!
